    The Oral Health Self-Care Behavior and Dental Attitudes among Nursing Home Personnel PDF

    The need for nursing home care will increase for the next several decades.  Rural areas will be impacted in particular, as many older adults live in rural areas.  Daily oral infection control changes when a person moves from independent living to institutional living.  Oral care to dependent individuals is influenced by many factors. The purpose of this study is to determine the association of oral health self-care behavior with dental attitudes in nursing home personnel in a rural state.  A survey was provided to attendees at an oral health conference.  Questions were asked to determine dental knowledge, oral health self-care behavior, and dental care attitudes.  Of 128 long term care health care facilities' personnel invited, there were 31 attendees, and 21 of the attendees participated (67.7%).  Nursing home personnel had a high level of dental knowledge.  Oral health self-care behavior was independently influenced by dental knowledge (β=0.17; p=0.0444) and dental attitudes (β=0.55; p=.0081).  Further investigation is needed to determine if oral health self-care attitudes and oral self-care behavior of nursing home personnel are factors in the provision of quality daily oral infection control for dependent nursing home residents living in rural areas.

    Duty and Freedom in T. Obinkaram Echewa's The Land's Lord: A Sartrean Assessment PDF

    T. Obinkaram Echewa's The Land's Lord appears to be little known among African literary critics, but it is a narrative that explores the individual soul in such a way that it seems to reach far beyond that individual soul, achieving far wider significance. A reading of this novel based on the action represented may get caught up in the discourse and discursive practices of African traditional society and its familiar narrative strategies, whereas it is asking much deeper questions, questions of existence, self-cognition, and identity. One of the main characters of this novel, Philip, is centrally preoccupied with these questions. Sartre's philosophy of authentic humanness is used in this study to make sense of Philip's search, and to account for the other characters' struggles and the kinds of meanings they construct out of their experiences.

    "Right, what are we having done today?": Examining Cultural Challenges in Service - Encounters at a British Beauty Salon in Kuwait PDF

    Kuwaiti society is increasingly striving to evolve into western modernity. It is for this reason that the Kuwait marketplace heavily relies on foreign franchises, be they British franchises such as Harvey Nichols and Marks and Spencer, or American franchises such as Dunkin' Donuts and Starbucks (Welsh et al. 2001). These activities entail a large influx of western workers who are unaccustomed to the conservative, Arab and Islamic culture of the host country.

    This paper investigates the interaction between hairdressers from the UK in a British beauty salon and its Kuwaiti clients, providing a useful insight into the cross-cultural challenges encountered between participants from different backgrounds in this service-oriented setting. The subject of this study is an area that has seen little research in the Gulf region, a part of the world which is not the frequent object of sociolinguistic and ethnographic research (but see a study carried out in the UAE by Palfreyman and Al Khalil 2003; and another in Kuwait by Almubayei 2010). Additionally, this study is significant because although numerous studies look at communication in the hairdressing service sector in western societies (see, for example Cohen 2010; Garzaniti et al. 2011; McCarthy 2000; Sharma and Black 2001; and Toerien and Kitzinger 2007), a few studies have concentrated on the Middle Eastern regions.

    This study utilizes sociolinguistic qualitative analysis to explore various patterns of client/hairdresser interaction. All transcribed instances of interaction presented in this study have been collected in conjunction with eight weeks of ethnographic observation and interviews with both clients and hairdressers. Analysis specifically focuses on three forms of interaction: task-oriented talk, relational small talk, and silence or non-talk (Holmes 2000, Jowroski 2000, McCarthy 2000, Tracy and Coupland 1990).

    Findings indicate that cross-cultural differences between foreign hairdressers and local, Kuwaiti clients are manifested in (non-language related) challenges that often affect hairdresser/client relationships. This paper, therefore, highlights the importance of training programs in helping to introduce potential foreign employees who aspire to work in the Gulf region to the importance of cultural background knowledge of the host country.

    Goldfields Ghana Limited, Tarkwa Mines and Community Infrastructure Development in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality of Ghana PDF

    Mining activities are recognizable and visibly seen in the nature and scope of its activities in Africa. Even though there is growing concern of the negative dimensions of mining activities on the environment and even socio-cultural conditions of mining communities, mining projects can have major socio-economic impacts. With varying perspectives on the real impact of mining companies, development of mining communities remains a critical issue. The mining companies have always responded to these assertions with a catalogue of social development programmes and interventions for supporting community growth and development through their Corporate Social Responsibilities.

    This Paper therefore studies the community infrastructure development of mining companies with regards to Goldfields Ghana Limited, Tarkwa Mines in Ghana. It also highlights the benefits, prospects and challenges encountered in the course of providing these community infrastructures. Data for the Study was obtained from both primary and secondary sources. Purposive and simple random sampling techniques were used in the selection of the target population. The Study proposes measures to inform policy formulation in determining the development dynamics of mining companies and their contribution to community infrastructure development within their catchment communities.

    Evaluation of John Dewey in Terms of Articles Reflected in Periodicals in Turkey PDF

    The aim of this research is to make a general evaluation of the articles about John Dewey published in the period of Cumhuriyet Age in Turkey.  For this aim, on internet and libraries some key word search was done in these tittles "˜John Dewey,  Dewey  and  J. Dewey'. The articles that were suitable were analysed with content analysis technique. After this practice, the articles were collected under some categories and evaluated. At the end of the research in the articles about John Dewey and published in the Cumhuriyet age, it has been found there are many reports on Dewey's life, his views on education and philosophy and evaluations over his Works that has been translated to Turkish, his reports on Turkish Education System, the reflections of his Works to today's education, his views on democratic education and his contributions to Turkish and world education systems.
